WHAT IS SEBUM (OIL), ANYWAY?
Sebum is an oily wax produced by the skin that acts as “food” for acne-causing bacteria, and excess sebum can often lead to breakouts.
Acne hormones, known as androgens, are responsible for stimulating sebum production and play a key role in how much oil the skin produces.
These hormone levels fluctuate throughout life for both females and males - rising during puberty, continuing through the teenage years, and changing again during pre-menopause and menopause. When acne hormone levels increase, they can trigger higher sebum production and inflammation, which can lead to more frequent and severe acne breakouts.
